Log retention

A new Log retention setting has been added to Log settings:

Log retention

Using this slider you can configure how many days you want to keep messages in a specific log. Each subscription plan comes with overall retention, but in scenarios where you want to lower this for one or more logs, you can use this feature. Examples could be a development log where you only want to keep messages for a few days or in regards to logs containing personally identifiable information that you are only allowed to keep for x days.

Lowering the log retention will not help in regards to keeping beneath your monthly message quota, since that is calculated from how many log messages get received and stored and not when they are cleaned up.

Elmah.Io.Cli 4.0.56

We released a new version (4.0.56) of the elmah.io CLI. The new version includes the following change:

New DPA including updated SCCs

We have an updated version (v3) of our Data Processing Agreement (DPA) including the modernized standard contractual clauses under the GDPR for data transfers from controllers or processors in the EU/EEA to controllers or processors established outside the EU/EEA. Let us know if your business requires an updated version and we will provide you with a signed copy.

Updated PowerShell help article

The PowerShell documentation has been given some much-needed attention. We now recommend using the Invoke-RestMethod Cmdlet over installing NuGet packages. There’s a new examples section where we publish inspirational ways of utilizing elmah.io and PowerShell. If you are currently logging to elmah.io from PowerShell in an interesting way, let us know through the support and we may share your code.

New email footers

New footers have been added to all transactional email templates telling you exactly why you are receiving an email and how to unsubscribe/avoid similar emails going forward:

Show/hide password

All password fields (reset password, login, apps, etc.) have been changed so that you can choose to see the inputted password to help spot failing passwords:

Show/hide password

Nothing changed in relation to security. All passwords are still posted to elmah.io using HTTPS, with a CSRF token, and all other security measures that you’d expect.

Help article: How to search custom data

Did you know that custom data can be used for full-text search on elmah.io? We have extracted the limited information we had about this feature from the ASP.NET documentation and made a general help article with examples for other web and logging frameworks too. Check out the new document here: How to search custom data.

Delivery problems during the last 2 hours

There have been some delivery problems with Azure Service Bus during the last two hours. This caused some log messages to the elmah.io API to fail. We have been investigating if anything could be done on our end, but the problem seems to have been fixed from Microsoft’s side now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Improved URL grouping containing GUIDs

The URL grouping algorithm that fuels features like the Unique grouping option on the UI and the new error detection have been improved. With the recent change, elmah.io will start considering the following URLs as the same URL:

/products/07ffdd2b-db77-4614-a310-5530cc8f7a89/edit
/products/c82d2c83-4e43-49b3-961a-230dd80cc1ee/edit

This change is for GUIDs only. We have already done something similar for numbers and timestamps.

Updated security headers

We have updated a couple of security headers on elmah.io and app.elmah.io. This is a result of our latest penetration test results and to prepare for the upcoming changes in PCI 4 compliance. The updated headers should not cause any changes in your experience with elmah.io, but make sure to reach out if something isn’t working as expected.

Chart on log search

It is now possible to show a chart on the log search page. Click the Show chart button and a nice histogram will be generated above the search result. The chart can be used to narrow down search results too, making it easier to navigate to a specific point in time:

Improved security on sign-in types

As requested by some of you we have improved the security settings around allowed/disallowed sign-in types on your organization. In case you forgot, the security settings previously offered you to enforce two-factor authentication on users with username/password and disallow users from all social providers only. With the improved settings, you can pick exactly which sign-in type you want to allow accessing your organization:

Improved security on sign-in types

By default, all sign-in types are allowed on new organizations. For existing organizations, we have migrated your existing security settings to the new model.

If you want to learn more about the new security settings, check out the updated documentation.

Multiple Visual Studio extension download links

We gave up waiting for the Visual Studio Marketplace to support multi-targeting in listings. That’s why you now have the option of downloading the elmah.io extension for either VS2022 or pre-VS2022 through the log settings page:

For reference, here are the download links if you want to check out the elmah.io Visual Studio extension:

Links to exception details pages

The elmah.io app now links to the new exception details pages directly from the message details view:

Exception details pages

We have launched details pages for a range of commonly logged exceptions on elmah.io. For an example, check out the System.NullReferenceException page. While the official pages on the Microsoft Documentation site are fine, they are very much focused on properties and methods. On top of that, there’s often not much help to avoid each exception. With the new exception details pages, we are trying out a different approach, by combining exception statistics from Stack Overflow, YouTube videos, and code examples for helping to avoid throwing exceptions in the first place. We hope that you will like these pages and we are currently evaluating how to build this into the elmah.io app.
